Several times during the brainstorming to develop this charity for North American Truck Drivers, the question "are you trying to change an entire industry?" was brought up several times. The answer is yes. Yes we are. Yes we should, and yes we will. At least this aspect of the industry anyway. Our specific intent is to help drivers and their families in times of crisis.
Many times, drivers and their families are hovering near poverty and the picture is plain to see every day in the industry. But 'we' just look beyond it. We choose not see it to because we are struggling to deal with our own issues. How many CEO's have done a 34 hour reset in one of their trucks at any truck stop? How many dispatchers have stopped to do their laundry at one? How many safety directors have had a meal or maybe a shower at a truck stop in the last year?? How about a walk through of the truck parking lot in the middle of a humid afternoon? Probably a short list.
Truck drivers do that every day. When we are not negotiating the highway, or sitting countless hours at a shipper or receivers dock, we are usually at a truck stop. Or worse, an unsecure rest area or on/off ramp.
Wages have been near stagnant since the 90's. Regulations have multiplied. Pressure for on time delivery takes presidence over home time. Larger companies are now schooling their own student work force, with some of those companies allowing a "trainer" to train a "team". (That's three people in one truck!) Driver turnover is skyrocketing.
truckersfinalmile.org is extending an open invitation to any and all other established 501 (c) (3) organizations for the trucking industry to communicate and collaborate with each other so that we may concentrate our programs to provide the utmost in service to all North American Truck Drivers and their families.
Email robert@truckersfinalmile.org and we will happily post your logo with a brief discription of your programs and a link to your website on this page.
We are looking forward to hearing from you and to work together with you to yes: change this industry! Thank you.
